Pedestrian safety in public spaces is one of the key challenges facing local authorities and transport infrastructure designers today. SMARTPOLE Crossing has been developed in response to these growing demands, offering an advanced active pedestrian crossing system that combines innovative technology, durable construction and high-quality design.

Active Safety – How SMARTPOLE Crossing Works

SMARTPOLE Crossing is based on intelligent pedestrian detection technology. When a pedestrian approaching the crossing is detected, the system automatically activates:

  • Visual warning signals – nine pulsating amber lights integrated into each column;
  • Voice announcements encouraging pedestrians and drivers to exercise caution;
  • An illuminated D-6 pedestrian crossing sign, which operates continuously after dark.

This combination of visual and audible alerts significantly improves crossing visibility and enhances driver awareness, particularly during adverse weather conditions and at night.

Durable Construction and Advanced Materials

At the heart of the system are composite lighting columns manufactured from glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP). These columns offer:

  • Resistance to corrosion, including biological corrosion;
  • Excellent resistance to UV radiation and road salt;
  • Non-conductive electrical properties;
  • Easy cleaning and minimal maintenance requirements.

The standard column height is 6 metres, while its cylindrical shape and smooth painted finish allow it to blend seamlessly into contemporary urban environments.

Flexible Installation Options

SMARTPOLE Crossing is available in two primary configurations:

  • SKPF-SCO – column mounted on a foundation;
  • SKPW-SCO – column directly embedded into the ground.

The foundation design and installation method are selected according to site-specific ground conditions and project requirements, in compliance with applicable construction regulations.

A Complete Safety System – More Than Just a Lighting Column

SMARTPOLE Crossing is far more than a lighting structure. The system includes:

  • An asymmetric LED luminaire (Cordoba LED II or III);
  • A double-sided active D-6 pedestrian crossing sign;
  • An advanced control unit with wireless communication between columns;
  • External PIR motion sensors;
  • A lithium-ion backup battery capable of supporting key system functions during power outages for up to approximately 300 activations.

The system also allows adjustment of signal activation times (from 5 to 80 seconds), volume levels for voice announcements, and the implementation of multilingual audio messages where required.

Compliance with Standards and Proven Reliability

SMARTPOLE Crossing complies with relevant European standards, including:

  • PN-EN 40 – design and verification of lighting columns;
  • PN-EN 1991-1-4 – wind load requirements;
  • EN 12767 – passive safety of support structures in the event of vehicle impact;
  • CE marking requirements.

As a result, the system provides a certified, reliable and safe solution suitable for installation on both one-way and two-way single carriageway roads.

A Smart Investment in Pedestrian Safety

SMARTPOLE Crossing has been designed to deliver a measurable improvement in pedestrian safety while maintaining exceptional durability and low operating costs. It is an ideal solution for cities and municipalities seeking to develop modern, intelligent and responsible road infrastructure that prioritises the wellbeing of all road users.
