Road, lighting, and telecommunications infrastructure is exposed not only to harsh weather conditions but also to acts of vandalism. For this reason, the resistance of materials to mechanical damage is becoming an increasingly important factor when selecting infrastructure solutions.
In a comparative test, two different types of poles—a composite pole and a steel pole—were subjected to repeated impacts using a baseball bat. The objective was simple: evaluate how each material performs when exposed to deliberate mechanical abuse.
Composite Maintains Its Appearance
Despite being struck multiple times with significant force, the composite pole showed no visible signs of damage. No dents, permanent deformations, or surface scratches affecting the appearance of the structure were observed.
This level of durability is particularly valuable in public spaces, where infrastructure elements are often exposed to accidental impacts as well as intentional acts of vandalism.
Steel Is Not Always the Toughest Option
The steel pole delivered a very different result. After several impacts, visible marks, scratches, and surface deformations appeared on the structure.
Although steel has long been considered a standard material for infrastructure applications, tests like this demonstrate that it does not always provide the highest level of resistance to everyday mechanical damage.
Durability That Reduces Maintenance Costs
Resistance to vandalism is about more than appearance. Infrastructure that is less susceptible to damage requires fewer repairs, lower maintenance costs, and retains its original condition for a longer period of time.
This is one of the reasons why composite poles are increasingly being used in urban environments, transportation networks, industrial facilities, and other locations where long-term durability is essential.
The test clearly demonstrated that modern composite materials can withstand the challenges of everyday use, offering advantages not only in corrosion resistance but also in protection against mechanical damage and vandalism.
